Summer in America can mean a lot of different things but I think we can all agree that baseball goes with summer like sprinkles go with donuts! Crochet this smiling amigurumi baseball and celebrate an American pastime with my free pattern below. The best part is this baseball can’t break any windows!
In order to crochet this cute amigurumi baseball, you’ll need the following materials:
Materials Needed
- Crochet hook size C/2.75mm
- Worsted weight yarn in white, red, and pink
- Black embroidery thread
- A darning needle to weave in ends
- Poly-fill stuffing
Skills Needed and Abbreviations
- Magic circle (mc)
- Single crochet stitches (sc)
- Single crochet increases (inc) – make two single crochets into the same stitch
- Single crochet invisible decreases (dec) – insert your hook into the front loop of the next stitch. Next, insert your hook into the front loop of the stitch after that. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops. Yarn over and pull through the last two loops.
- Simple sewing
- Working in the round (rnd) – you will not be joining rounds
The perfect baseball starts out with a perfect sphere. I find that the typical pattern of crochet increases and decreases doesn’t necessarily translate to a perfect sphere. So I went hunting and found a sphere stitch calculator!
I wanted my baseball to be 60 stitches around at its widest. Here’s where the calculator comes in handy: plug in that number and the calculator will do the rest. The formula wasn’t quite perfect (I found some typos) but I did end up with a well-shaped sphere.
Pin this amigurumi baseball for later!

Stuff your baseball, paying attention to the shape. It should be tightly stuffed to fill out the spherical shape but not so tight to stretch out your stitches. Stuff a little bit more after round 31.

Rnd 32: dec, inv dec across 3 stitches instead of 2, 3 dec (5)
Fasten off. Weave your needle through the front loops of your stitches and pull tight to close the round. Thread the needle through the middle of the round and pull your yarn into the ball and out the side. Weave in the end and cut.
Baseball Cheeks – Make 2
Make a magic circle with your pink yarn.
Rnd 1: 6 scs in the mc (12)
Rnd 2: 6 inc (12)
Fasten off and leave a tail long enough to sew the cheek onto your baseball. Repeat to make the other cheek.
Putting Together Your Amigurumi Baseball
Embroider your sleepy eyes and mouth. I started my eyes between rounds 3 and 4 and stretched them across 3 rows, with about four stitches between them. I embroidered the mouth directly below where the eyes started: make a simple V across two rows.
Sew on your cheeks. I placed mine between rows 6 and 10.
And now for the baseball lace stitches. This part is the hardest but the process is much easier if you go around your ball with straight pins and pin an outline of where you want your stitches to go. Here’s the basic pattern you’re going for:
I embroidered the face just below where the baseball lace stitch pattern narrows in the middle. I used red worsted yarn and did a simple back stitch for the laces and horizontal lines for the crosshatching. You can see in the picture that real baseball laces actually look like little V’s but I opted for the easy route of simple horizontal lines. Again, use pins to help guide your lace lines! It’s much easier than freehanding it.

I am at the last round and I am a bit confused,
Rnd 32: dec, inv dec across 3 stitches instead of 2, 3 dec (5)
What does it mean by βinv dec across 3 stitches instead of 2β ?
Omg I think I get it now that I am writing this outβ¦

For round 25 it should contain 41 not 40, as stated. I undid and re crocheted the round 3 times thinking I messed up until I did the math. May want to fix that if you can
