Attaching Hair to Amigurumi by Hooking in Individual Strands

This eye-catching method is accomplished by cutting pieces of yarn and individually attaching them to your piece with your crochet hook. You can use a pet brush to brush out the yarn for a fuzzy effect.

You can see this method in action on Lewis the Lion by Theresa’s Crochet Shop. Cut all the lengths, attach, brush and trim. It’s time-intensive but the end result is quite fetching!

A note: brushing seems to work best on acrylic yarn. I haven’t had great luck with brushing out cotton yarn, despite what you see below. Cotton is prone to breakage so proceed with caution if that’s the method you choose.

Fold a yarn strand in half so you have a loop. Insert your crochet hook through a stitch in your amigurumi and pull the loop through the stitch. Then pull the ends through the loop to make a knot. Keep going.

Attach Hair to Amigurumi by Crocheting a Wig Cap

I learned more about this method in the crochet pattern book Mini Kingdom by Olka Novytska. A wig cap is just as it sounds: a crocheted cap that sits on the head. It can be sewn onto the head or removable. I think it’s fun to keep it removable since the kiddos enjoy swapping wig caps across characters.

Attach Hair to Amigurumi by Crocheting Individual Hair Pieces

Another way to attach hair to amigurumi is to crochet individual curls and sew them onto your piece. I don’t prefer this method because of all the loose ends you have to weave in but it seems to be a popular method. You have more control over curl placement but there’s more sewing involved. And raise your hand if you like sewing. No one? Bueller?

I created this amigurumi horse’s bangs by crocheting individual curls and sewing them on (the pattern is Horse Piem by MyKrissieDolls).

But wait, there’s more! There IS a way to crochet curls onto your amigurumi without sewing. Simply attach the yarn by pulling up a loop directly on your amigurumi and start your curls. Move on to the next curl by slip stitching into the next stitch on the head. I used this method on Sophie the Sheep below. There are less ends to weave in and you don’t even have to sew!
