A crocheted bear wearing a white and yellow sweater has a green backpack with brown straps and a rolled up sleeping mat.

Meet the newest member to join the Moonbeam amigurumi family: Everett the Backpacking Bear! And the most exciting part is that his pattern is FREE here on Moonbeam Stitches!

With a sleeping mat in his pack and a smile on his face, Everett is ready to tackle the trail. My husband and I used to backpack when we lived in the Pacific Northwest so I knew someday I’d have to create a backpacking character.

Everett’s pattern has been tested by multiple crocheters, and the low-cost PDF is ad-free and print-friendly. Keep reading for the free pattern or visit my Etsy shop or Ravelry store to purchase the pattern. Buying patterns from designers helps acknowledge the work and many hours that go into creating and testing a pattern. It lets us know you care and want to see more!

In Honey, embroider stripes using a back stitch between rounds 27/28, 31/31, and 34/35.

Now you’ll divide the work and separate the legs. Mark the middle 4 stitches in the front and the back. You should have 17 stitches on each side. Rnd 42 should end in the BACK of the bear at the stitch before the middle marker. You may need to remove some of your stitches to get there. You will start the first leg by making an sc in the stitch across from where you currently are, next to the stitch marker on the front of the bear. This is the first stitch of Rnd 43.

I'm holding the crocheted bear upside down, and stitch markers show where the legs divide.
Divide the legs with stitch markers

Fasten off and weave your yarn needle through each loop of Rnd 59, pulling tight to close the hole. Weave in the end through the leg.

Left Leg

Attach yarn in Thicket in the stitch to the left of your back middle stitches, leaving a 12” tail to eventually sew the opening closed. Ch 1.

Rnd 43. Starting in the same stitch where you attached the yarn, sc in each stitch around until you reach the marker. (17)
Rnd 44. Begin this round by making an sc in the stitch across from where you currently are, the first stitch of Rnd 43, connecting the leg. Continue around with an sc in each stitch. (17)

Rows 2-26. Ch 1 and turn. 15 sc. (15) Fasten off and weave in the tail.

Flip the backpack upside down and attach green yarn to the last front loop of round 4. Slip stitch in each stitch around. This gives the bottom of the backpack a nice contrasting border.

Stuff the backpack about halfway full if you want to give it some shape or leave it empty.

Backpack Side Pockets – Make 2

Rnd 1. 5 sc in MC (5)
Rnd 2. 5 inc (10)
Rnds 3-8. Sc around for 6 rounds (10)

Ch 26. Work in rows.

Starting in the third loop from hook, hdc in each stitch back across the chain. (24)

Fasten off and leave a 12” tail. Sew the ends of the straps on the back of the backpack on rows 6 and 17. There should be about six stitches between the straps.

Two pictures show the front and back of Everett's backpack. The pack is light green with a bright green flap and pockets. The back straps are light green and the front straps are brown with embroidered yellow buckles.

Front backpack straps – make 2

Make in Thicket

Ch 11. Work in rows.

Starting in the second loop from hook, sc in each stitch back across the chain. (10)

Fasten off and leave a 12” tail. Sew the straps on the front of the backpack. Sew the tops of the straps to row 17 of the backpack flap. Continue sewing the strap onto the front of the flap and onto the front of the backpack, sewing the end of the straps over row 7 of the backpack.

Embroider a buckle with Honey yarn by sewing straight lines across the bottoms and lower sides of the straps, and a straight vertical line from the last stitch of the strap to between rounds 5 and 6 of the backpack.

Roll up the sleeping pad and push it through the opening at the top of the backpack. Everett is ready for an adventure!
